Expatriate Management

The repatriation Process

Dear repatriate,

This questionnaire forms part of a final thesis in International Business Studies. Your contribution will add great value to the outcome of this research, undertaken on behalf of Maastricht University. Since time is really short for this project you are kindly requested to complete this questionnaire as soon as possible.

As the globalization of business has accelerated, growing numbers of managers are being sent overseas. They are sent to give assistance to operations of the subsidiaries in the foreign countries. The managers who are sent abroad by their company for a number of years are known as expatriate managers.

The number of successful assignments is recently increasing due to better training programs, longer preparation time, and better assistance by the organization. However, whereas the number of successful assignments may have been increased, the number of managers who are leaving the organization after repatriation is still remarkable high. There are different, possible reasons for this high retention rate, like the ignorance and undervaluation of their newly gained international skills, and the position of the expatriate after ending the expatriate assignment. Both can lead to frustration of the expatriate which can lead to the retention of the expatriate. The loss of these managers is a loss of international knowledge and experience, and makes the investment, financially and socially, in the expatriate worthless for the organization.

Objective

This questionnaire is designed to gather more information about the different reasons managers have to leave the organization after their repatriation. Results from this questionnaire are twofold. One the one hand it enables me to analyze how organizations prepare their expatriates on the repatriation process. On the other hand it provides an opportunity for me to come up with solutions and recommendations for organizations and their expatriates.

Confidentiality

Your response tot this questionnaire will remain anonymous and completely confidential. Individual responses will not be reported . The estimated completion time is about 15 minutes. Thank you very much in advance for your time and cooperation.
